What brake pads do I need for a 1979 LeTour III Schwinn?
I am updating a pair of Schwinn LeTour bicycles that we bought in 1979. I have gathered that the Kool Stop pads are good brake pads, but how do I find which type to buy? The original pads say 'COMPE' on the side, and have an aluminum channel crimped over the V shape in the rubber brake pad. I suspect that the pad with bolt is replaced as a unit. The pad itself is approximately 1.5 inches long. 0.5 inches wide, and 0.6 inches from the caliper to the rim. The surface that touches the rim has grooves such that there are three areas that contact the rim.
The following is a description of one set of brake pads that look like they might work:
Kool Stop Campy Dual Compound Brake Inserts- Mixed condition (Dual Compound) replacement pads for Campagnolo Chorus, Athena, and Record brake pad holders.
I would like to get these bikes into condition for riding on paved bike trails, and brakes and tires seem like a good place to start.
Thanks for any direction!
Yep....new pads are a good idea if yours are several years (or decades!) old.
)
You can put just about any kind of pad on there that you want to. KoolStop makes good ones, but anything will work. Some brake pads today have a metal holder that you can replace just the rubber pad....others are still made just like your old ones there the pad is crimped permanently into the holder. When you go to the shop, they should have kits with the holder and pads if you want the "cartridge" style that's replaceable....they'll probably have the replacement pads for them as well. They're certain to have the normal style pads, too (Weinmann, DiaCompe, Shimano, Jagwire, etc).
One thing you need to know is if you have threaded or post-style brake pads (sounds like you have threaded). Bring one to the shop with you to be sure you get the right type for your brakes.
As far as KoolStop pads are concerned, the regular black compound is pretty good. The salmon (red) pads stop better in most conditions, and the grey ones are great. The brakes on your old bike aren't nearly as powerful as more modern designs, and even with a super-good pad you may not notice much difference....keep that in mind before you spend $30 on a set of blingy pads.
